From
the Pastor’s desk…
HELLO to all through the Internet
from Sacred Heart Parish in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada! It is with
the same spirit of faith and welcome that began our parish 100 years
ago that we welcome you today.
At Sacred Heart Parish, we are
guide by our Mission Statement “We are a welcoming community of
believers guided by the light of the Holy Spirit to live Christ’s
love through the sharing of our gifts.”
This being the Year of the
Eucharist, proclaimed by the late Pope John Paul II, we are gathered
in love and fellowship around the altar each Sunday and during the
week to celebrate Holy Mass – the core and centre of our parish
life. We are also blessed to have the presence of Christ in the
Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament for private adoration. Communion for
the sick and dying is also available. Our church is not just a House
of God but the Home of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament.
From the Mass, we go forth to
bring Christ’s message of compassion and service to our community.
We start with the family - the domestic church, our Catholic schools
– where Christ’s teaching is proclaimed to our youth, to the
hospitals – to bring comfort and care to the sick and elderly. Our
parish is involved in Pastoral Care to the nursing homes, shut-ins
and senior lodges. Our Social Justice is extended to support
organizations like Loaves and Fishes, Inn from the Cold and local
food banks. We minister to new immigrants and refugees and have a
monthly Spanish Mass. One of the Parish projects that impressed me
when I arrived in the Parish was the Friendship Meals on the third
and fourth Sunday of every month when we share with the hungry in
our inner city.
Sacred Heart Parish offers an
excellent sacramental program for young families to journey with
their children in their faith. Also, RCIA is offered once a year
for adults wanting to become members of the Catholic faith. There is
a Mom and Tots group as well as grief support groups. Bible study
is also available.
